3 Sisters Left Abandoned in the Basement
Yesol Chun February 15, 2013On January 21st, pastor Kim(alias) found three sisters in their teens having serious illness, symptom of malnutrition in the the basement of an apartment building in Goyang city located close to Seoul. Pastor Kim took them immediately to the hospital because of their dire health conditions.
According to the Goyang police, the second eldest sister was diagnosed with chronic seizures, disk of her spine and mental anxiety disorder. The youngest was found to have symptoms of paralysis to the lower part of her body because of osteoporosis.
After long surgery, they are currently recuperating at the hospital. Unfortunately, the youngest will need to use a wheel chair for an extended period of time. The eldest sister’s health was not dire so she is currently being taken care of by pastor Kim.
The problem was caused by their parent’s neglect. The police indicated that the parents divorced and the father had to raise the three kids on his own. For the past five years, he has been a temporary laborer that requires working outside of Goyang city. The father remarried and left child rearing to the stepmother. For five to six years, he has been sending allowance for the kids through the stepmother. However, she only gave half the amount, just enough for rent and living expenses.
Fifteen thousand won was not enough for the sisters to live. They could only eat rice and Kimchi, which are basic Korean dishes, they could not afford to pay their gas and electronic bills. They also could not go to school because their parents never enrolled them.
It is difficult to believe this incident happened in Korea in the 21st century. There are still many people who do not enjoy their basic human rights.
