Doctors Misuse and Abuse of Sleep Inducer on Patient

Sang Kyul Park August 14, 2012

Having been revealed that an obstetrician abandoned the dead body of a  30-year-old female patient after the misuse and abuse  of a medical sleep inducer is causing a larger uproar.

On the 30th of July at approximately 10:30 pm obstetrician, Dr. Kim, claimed he injected the sleep inducer, Midazolam, to 30-year-old Ms. Lee. When she died after the injection, he took her dead body to her car and abandoned it in the parking lot of the outdoor pool at the Han River. He stated that he has known Ms. Lee for two years since she received surgery in his hospital. He also mentioned that he conducted injections of 5mg of Midazolam routinely. It was known that Ms. Lee used to receive the shot for fatigue recovery frequently due to depression and sleep disorder. The sleep inducer, Midazolam, is an injection that is classified as a psychotropic drug. It is used to reduce fear and pain to the mother when suturing the local incision after common childbirth. However, the Seocho Police Station announced that what Dr. Kim stated was false. On 2nd August, the Seocho Police Station reported that Dr. Kim injected  a shot including Midazolam mixed with Hartmann’s Dex Solution (glucose supplements) to Ms. Lee. Moreover, it was found that they met together since last year after Ms. Lee’s surgery and had sexual relations after receiving nutrient injections every three months. He also used the drug without permission from the the hospital.

In many hospitals, there is a department called Anesthetic Department which deals with anesthetic drugs. Doctors and nurses are allowed use of all the anesthetic drugs after reporting their medical purpose intent. With the increase amount of hospitals and the decreasing number of patients, doctors inject anesthetic drugs anytime to make an easy gain without any advice from specialists. Accordingly, the healthcare centers of each district go to the hospital unexpectedly to check if the hospital is utilizing any illegal drugs. However, the management system is not tightly controlled and the doctors use the drugs by mixing with other nutrient tonics.

Sleep inducer drugs are often used as a pick-me-up. It is already well known among the celebrities. Celebrities do not routinely receive the shot, but they do get them administered when they are extremely tired. Sleep Inducer helps to fall asleep in a short time. The side effect of sleep inducer is toxicity. It is well known that when a person get a shot, one can never forget the feeling. Even if one shot is expensive, people come again to have a shot. Some doctors do not inform what drugs they are using to the patients. Moreover, there is a highly risk that sexual abuse may occur.

Since 2007, sexual crime by doctors have steadily increased. Though there is no disciplinary action stated for the doctors who conduct sexual abuse in criminal law, but in medical law, there is a statement about canceling doctor’s license. The statement about canceling doctor’s license is made to expel the doctor who lose the doctor’s dignity. However, the conditions to enforce it is too fastidious. The medical world and the public claimed that sexual abuse by doctors should be mentioned in criminal law as special sex offender. In addition, the management of sleep inducer should be tightened up.
